My dog has kennel cough symptoms after boarding. When to see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Catahoula Leopard Dog | Male | neutered | 2 years old | 60 lbs

My husband and I suspect Mocha has kennel cough, contracted from a boarding facility he stayed at last weekend. He has a cough like something is in his throat, wheezing when he sleeps, and seems a little more tired than normal. Are these consistent with a case of kennel cough, and what are things we can do to help? Do we take him to a veterinary clinic today, or can it wait for our normal vet on Monday?

Kennel cough doesn't typically cause wheezing while sleeping, but the other symptoms are common. If Mocha has a normal activity level and doesn't have any breathing issues when awake, it can probably wait. But if you are at all concerned about the way he is breathing, then he should be checked out ASAP.
