My dog has a clean cut. Does she need stitches or emergency vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | spayed | 3 years and 1 month old | 170 lbs

I’m unsure if I need to bring her into the emergency vet for stitches. Clean cut a little over an inch long.

It doesn't appear deep. If there is no active bleeding, clean it up with a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution. I see you have a triple antibiotic ointment. You can dab a bit on the area. Place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent pawing or rubbing. Monitor for lethargy, fever, bleeding, swelling, discharge or loss of appetite. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian.

This does look like a puncture wound or injury of some sort. I would recommend cleaning it with some dilute iodine solution or dilute hydrogen peroxide. You may also want to apply some topical antibiotic ointment on it as well. If the wound does not appear to be healing over the next 24 hours or if there are multiple areas like this throughout the skin, then I would recommend taking her in to the vet because she may need some oral antibiotics to help the area heal.

Gently clean the area with a mild antibacterial soap or diluted Betadine solution. Dry thoroughly. You can apply a dab of triple antibiotic ointment daily. Place an e-collar (cone) on Zoya to prevent licking or chewing. If the spot doesn't begin to heal in a few days, have her examined by your veterinarian. Monitor for lethargy, discharge, swelling, odor or redness.
