Persian cat's fungus won't go away. Is long-term medication safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Female | spayed | 1 year and 3 months old | 6 lbs

Hello! I have a Persian cat, and for about 6 months she has had a fungus infection, taking baths every week or two and taking orally itraconazole, but she still has it, and all the veterinarians where I live (Paraguay) says that I should keep doing it, but we never can make all the fungus disappear, what do you recommend? Can the itraconazole be bad if she keeps taking it orally?

You may need to do antifungal baths more frequently, as in 2-3 times a week. Lime sulfur dips would also help rid the fungus. There are other oral antifungal medications that may work better, such as ketoconazole. I would discuss these options with Mel's vet. BTW, she is BEAUTIFUL!
