My puppy has a growing, hot knot on his tail. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dalmatian | Male | unneutered | 8 lbs

Hi! I’ve had my blue heeler Dalmatian mix for about 4-5 weeks now and when we got him he had a knot on his tail that the person we got him from said he had a double tail?? When he was born. The knot is shield getting bigger and I’m not sure what to do. I can’t afford a vet and don’t want it to be something serious. It does not hurt him to touch it or gently squeeze it but there is some heat

Hello. I’m not exactly sure what they meant when they said a “double tail”. There really is no such thing. This large bump may be a cyst or an abscess. It definitely needs to be checked out by your veterinarian. A new puppy should always have a veterinarian examine them to look for problems within 1-3 days after purchase/adoption. This puppy also needs vaccinations and checked for parasites. Your veterinarian can address the tail and take care of the other preventive care things that need to be done.
