Is my young cat's leg sprain and urine crystals normal with bupe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 10 months old | 9.5 lbs

My young kitty is on buprenorphine every 12 hours after hurting her back leg. Bones all fine and doesn’t seem major, but hurts/possible sprain. Odd for young cat to pull/sprain leg muscle? Also, She recently had urinalysis that indicated pH was too high at 7 and some presence of crystals. Wondering how bupe might affect pH and if I should give her the methagel from vets office or hold off few days. She’s on high quality wet food diet. Do the results show lots of crystals or not many?

Young cats are really active, so an occasional sprain isn't abnormal. pH of 7 is perfectly normal. Higher or lower can be normal or could cause or be caused by some types of urinary issues. Buprenorphine shouldn't affect her urine. I would follow your vet's recommendation for all medications or supplements. There were only a few crystals, but they are a kind that are not commonly found in the urine of cats. I would have your vet re-test the urine. If they are still there, additional testing may be warranted.
