My dog's hip dislocated. Is surgery needed if sling didn't work?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | spayed | 9 years and 6 months old | 10 lbs

My dog dislocated her hip. The vet wanted to do surgery I had them put it back in place. After one week they said that didn’t work and want to do surgery. Can you tell after a week if surgery is needed. Won’t this be bad for my dog. They took her out of the sling.

I'm so sorry to hear this happened. Dislocated hips rarely heal with closed reduction (a sling) although we always try it first. Surgery is usually the best option. Here is a link to an article with more information. ( https://www.marvistavet.com/hip-dislocation.pml )
