My cat just had kittens. Is a bump inside her normal after birth?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed

My pregnant cat has a small bump in her after giving birth but she isnt in labor anymore, not that I can tell. She looks calm and is tending to her kittens, but I was just wondering if it’s normal? She had her kittens 2 days ago.

Hello. I would not be too concerned. You are probably feeling the uterus as it is shrinking down, a process we call involution. As long as mom & the kittens are happy & content, then you can relax as well. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

No, this is not normal. This is an emergency, your cat has a prolapsed uterus which needs to be put back into your cat. Please put a moist cloth or paper towel around it and immediately take your kitty to a PetER or veterinarian. The vet will need to sedate her and carefully push in the uterus. This is an emergency. Go now.
