Why is my dog suddenly not jumping on the couch or bed anymore?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cockapoo | Female | spayed | 20 lbs

I’m looking for an opinion about a problem with my dog. I don’t see the option to submit a question to a vet? My almost 3 year old cockapoo has suddenly stopped jumping up onto the couch or down from the bed. She used to do this effortlessly and now we are having to pick her up to move her. This happened suddenly. She doesn’t seem to be in distress otherwise. Wondering what we should do?

Hi there. When a dog abruptly stops wanting to jump up on furniture, do stairs, etc., the most common cause would be back pain or some other type of orthopedic problem - even if she isn't yelping or whining, or showing any other obvious signs of pain. I would recommend taking her to the vet tomorrow for an exam. He/she can do a thorough orthopedic exam to check for problems, and may recommend x-rays if needed to help determine what's wrong.
