When and how to safely move a mother rat and her newborn babies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rat | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 14 days old | 0.5 lbs

So coco my rat had babies in a very large cage and I want to move her out of the large one into a slightly smaller one so my other rats have more space. Can I do it 5 days after birth and if I can what steps do I take to move them carefully and properly to the new cage.

Ideally, you should wait at least two weeks before disturbing the nest. If you must move it, scoop it and the pups up in one piece and relocate them to the larger cage. Be sure to transfer some of the cleaner used bedding as well.
