My dog has aspergillosis. Is itraconazole safe and when will he improve?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Staffordshire Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 14 years and 9 months old | 59.5 lbs

My 14 yr old dog has just been given itraconzole for suspected aspergillosis, is this safe for him as the side effects sound bad and what dose would be best for him? Also when would I see a difference as he is really struggling to breathe because of and he’s unhappy, thank you Michelle

It's true, the possible side effects are very scary. But this is true of most antifungals and unfortunately they are the only treatment for aspergillosis. The appropriate dose should be determined by your veterinarian who is familiar with Marley's medical history. It could take weeks or even months for the antifungal to start working, depending on the severity of the current infection. If he is really struggling, I would urge you to call your vet to see if additional medications or hospitalization for oxygen therapy is indicated.
