My golden has a soft knee lump. Is it cancer or a benign tumor?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 5 years old | 75 lbs

Found a 4x4cm mass on my 4.5 year old golden retrievers knee last week. Mass is soft and movable but feels like it’s below the muscle. Completely asymptomatic. Vet did an aspiration and the cytology showed moderate inflammatory cells with few spindle cells. He’s unsure of diagnosis and I wanted to see if this is likely a cancer or something else. Thank you!

It is probably a spindle cell tumor and should be removed. There is no way to know if it is malignant or benign without doing a histopathology on the mass after it is removed. I suggest you have this done while the mass is still relatively small and hopefully non-invasive into the underlying tissues. ( http://www.michigananimalhospital.com/page/468687590 )
