This could be due to a hyperkeratosis of the pads. Hyperkeratosis is a thickening of the skin which can occur in cats and dogs when too much keratin, or the fibrous proteins that comprise the outer layer of skin, is produced. This leads to excessive skin, which becomes hard, thickened, dried out, and callous-like. Usually is completely benign and no further action is needed.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. To answer your question, yes, this is paw pad hyperkeratosis. I've had success using a balm called BioBalm by Dermoscent, which helps reduce this. In these cases, I also trimmed the overgrown pad with scissors or a dremel file. I would discuss this with a veterinarian there so that you can have this addressed appropriately. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
