What causes my kitten's recurring stuffy nose and noisy breathing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I rescued 3 kitten siblings who were severely sick. vet estimated them at 4 weeks old. Dehydrated, and URI. Got medications and all was well. They are now estimated to be 4-5 months old. One kitten, Shadow (male) suffers once a month since with what sounds like a stuffy nose (no discharge) very noisy breathing. It goes away after a 7 day course of Doxycycline. Negative for nasal obstructions and also on Lysine. Can not figure out why only him suffers from this. any advice is appreciated.

He most likely has feline herpes virus. I suggest you contact your vet and work with them on what to do when there are flare-ups since they have the medical records, history and exam findings they can definitely tell you more. ( http://www.eyecareforanimals.com/conditions/feline-herpesvirus/ )
