My dog reacts to NexGard & Advantix. What are safe alternatives?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Male | neutered | 7 years and 2 months old | 22 lbs

Sparky seems to react to nextgard spectra. Within a day of taking it he loses his appetite, passes a lot of wind and is lethargic. This recurs to a lesser extent every few days and lasts a few hours. He has also passed what look suspiciously like round worm. What can I use instead. He is extremely itchy with avantik.

You have a few options. If you want an all in one product, try Trifexis. Otherwise you will two separate products. You might try Simparica (fleas/ticks) and Interceptor (heartworm/intestinal worms). I also recommend to have Sparky's stool checked for worms in case that was a round worm. For that parasite, pets are often given bolus dewormings since people can get that worm. That will clear up the infection faster.
