My dog cut his paw. How to prevent infection and manage pain at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 95 lbs

My dog cut his paw pad on what I am assuming to be glass. I can’t get into the vet until Saturday and am worried that the wound may become infected. What can I do to prevent this and aleviate any pain he may be feeling?

Ouch! I would keep the paw as clean and dry as possible, and keep Nike from licking at it by placing an Elizabethan (cone) collar on him. Limiting activity so he doesn't keep walking on it and introducing any more debris into the foot is also a good idea. Since it is such a big wound, seeing if you can get into the vet sooner is also a good idea so he can get started on pain meds or antibiotics as needed.
