Why is my dog's eye watering, discharging, and eyelid swollen?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | 1 year old | 30 lbs

I have noticed in the last few months that my dog's left eye has days that water more than normal. about 3 months ago i took him to a vet who examined him and said it was just an allergy. the vet gave me a medicine to apply to my dog's eye for 10 days. I noticed that it has improved, but from time to time the eye has a small abnormal discharge. Today I realized that the skin that covers his left eye is slightly larger than that of his right eye. I'll send the photo so you can see.

I see what you are talking about. Sometimes this can be related to inflammation but there could be another reason like a foreign object trapped under the skin or a blockage in the tear duct. I recommend to have Doggie Marley examined again since this is a new development. Make sure to show the vet the picture. It looks like this is progressing so try to get it figured out quickly.     Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I love your group picture! This is an upsetting story. The last picture shows your dog not even opening the left eye. To be honest I recommend a second opinion regarding their eyes. Since it has been going on since birth it could be a congenital issue like entropion (curling in of the eye lashes) or eye lashes that are growing abnormally contacting the eye. I highly recommend having them checked by another vet for a second opinion especially for the dog closing the left eye. That indicates pain. I wish you the best

It is a bit hard to tell from the photo as the images are a little blurry and shadow right over the affected area, but I would be concerned about a prolapsed third eyelid gland. The third eyelid has an associated gland that is normally tucked down in behind it that helps to produce tears. The brighter pink portion of tissue on the photo looks like it might be that gland. This is also referred to as a cherry eye. This condition is much more common in young dogs, so the fact that your 12 year old dog is just now showing this is concerning for some u deying condition causing swelling behind or under the eye. I would recommend that you discontinue the topical solution as this should not be applied without direct instruction from a vet that has looked at the eye and examined the cornea directly At this point, your dog should be seen for a hands on exam to look not only at the eye, but the inside and roof of the mouth for anything that may be putting pressure on the eyeball. My dog has had discharge and pawing at here eye and i removed a portion of the discharge which is black but the corner if the eye towards nose is swollen eye duct i guess and whole eye is red
It looks like the discharge may be caused by whatever is irritating the eye. If it is in just 1 eye, possibilities include a blocked tear duct, conjunctivitis, dust in the eye, infection, corneal abrasion or ulcer, or others. If both eyes are affected, it could also be caused by allergies. I recommend loosening the remaining dark eye discharge by warming it with a warm, wet washcloth and rubbing very gently. You can use a saline eye flush to gently flush the eye to remove any possible irritating debris. If the eye is still red in 24-48 hours, or if Fluffy starts to squint her eye or rub it with her paw, she needs to see a vet as soon as possible.

It sounds like this might be due to an allergy or autoimmune problem given the response to corticosteroids. Sometimes the lymph tissue associated with the third eyelid can become enlarged and I’m wondering if that is the case with the right eye, but it’s difficult to say without being able to examine in person. If the symptoms are not resolving with treatment you may want to ask your vet about referral to an ophthalmologist.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. Olini needs to see a vet as soon as possible. Potential causes for the sudden change that you see in the eye include severe conjunctivitis, corneal ulcer or abrasion, glaucoma, uveitis, and trauma. I can't quite tell from the picture, but it may be proptosed ("popped out"). If you have an emergency vet clinic open near by, this would be a case that I would advise seeking emergency care.

Eyes are sensitive. If the saline solution does not help after 24 hours, it is unlikely to help. At this point, Tyson needs to be examined by the veterinarian today. He could have an eye infection, a foreign object trapped under the eye lid or a scratch on the cornea. These conditions are all painful so don't wait. Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Elenor and for providing pictures, they are very helpful. I see what you mean about the swelling. It could be from an injury or from an allergic reaction. Try putting a cold compress on it for five minutes at a time a couple of times a day to see if that helps the swelling. If it doesn't help by Monday, it gets bigger, or you start to see an eye discharge, then I would take her into the vet. I hope this helps!

It is really hard to say for sure. I would recommend taking her to a vet for a good exam. Since it is her eyes that are affected it is important to make sure she does not need medications/eye drops to resolve the issue. If it is related to allergies you can try an over the counter anti histamine and possibly place a warm compress on the eyes 2 times a day to help remove debris and decrease inflammation. Thank you for posting the picture it is really helpful. What I see in the picture is called chemosis, or swelling of the conjunctiva of the eye. Most of the time this is not an emergency and is associated with allergies or other inflammation. However, in very rare cases it can indicate low protein levels of the blood which can be critical. Dogs eyes are randomly swollen hes acting completely normal
Oh my, poor Lamar! I can certainly see the prominent swellings of both of his eyelids. One of the most common causes of eyelid swelling is from an allergic reaction. The tricky part with allergic reactions is that we often aren't able to figure out the trigger - whether he may be reacting to an insect or spider bite, pollens outside, or countless other things. However, since it looks as though Lamar is missing a good bit of hair around his eyelids (although this could also be pigment change and some glare in the picture), other possible causes could be infectious issues, like mange. Certainly other skin lesions or itching would make this scenario more likely. Since it's most concerning that he's possibly experiencing an allergic reaction with swelling on his face, you really should take him to an emergency vet right away for evaluation and treatment. Some allergic reactions can progress to anaphylaxis, which can cause severe breathing difficulties. I hope that he's feeling better soon!
