My dog has diarrhea and vomiting for 2 days. Should I take him to vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 9 months old | 65 lbs

My dog Nick is a 2 year old German Shepard mix I’ve had for about a year. Came home late Monday night to a very runny dark stool all over the upstairs. Still runny though much lighter now 48 hrs later AND he threw up early this morning. Not sure if best to let it ride out another day or go ahead and take him to the vet. Help?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Nick. Most minor episodes of gastrointestinal upset will resolve in 48 hours without treatment. However, since he is still having diarrhea and is now vomiting, I do recommend that he sees a veterinarian today. I worry that he will become dehydrated from losing fluid. Fecal testing may be recommended. Usually fluids are given under the skin for mild dehydration. Anti-nausea medication can stop the vomiting. I hope this information helps!
