How to heal a dog's mouth cut from a bone, especially with drool?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Mastiff | Male | unneutered | 130 lbs

My dog has a cut in his mouth from a bone he was chewing on. It doesn't look big enough to need any stitches? He can eat his food without opening it up, but every time he drinks a bunch of water at once it opens up. Doesn't bleed a whole lot but he is a drooly mastiff and it gets all over. Any suggestions for getting to heal faster or keeping clean?

Without looking in the mouth, it'd be hard to say. Most mouth wounds heal up fast, but if it is still bleeding, the wound is bigger than your pinky nail, or there is facial swelling/pain, these are all signs of potential infection or a wound that is big enough that it requires treatment by your vet. Keeping any drool and debris away from the affected area is best so it can stay clean (a clean dry washcloth works great for mastiff drool!)
