Why does my puppy have a red throat and ulcers that won't heal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered

I have an 18 month old Lhasa apso cross poodle puppy. He is eating fine, desperate for his daily walks and nothing is different in his behaviour. We took him to the vets a month back because I noticed the back of his throat was red. They tested and found strep bacteria and he was on antibiotics however it hasn’t changed at all. The vet told me it’s ulcers but no explanation to what’s causing them. He’s not allergic to anything.

That is faucitis (inflammation of the cavity at the back of the mouth – the fauces) and definitely not normal. That tissue should be biopsied and sent to a laboratory for analysis. There are many possible underlying causes. That biopsy will help to determine what is causing this.
