How to give my cat a small Gabapentin dose from a 100mg capsule?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 2 years old | 12.4 lbs

If the dose of Gabapentin is so small, why is it only available in 100mg capsules? That means I have to break open the capsule and divide it into thirds for my cat!

It is a human drug and that is the lowest capsule strength available. It is best to ask your vet to have the drug compounded into a liquid or a transdermal gel. You dividing the capsules is not ideal - you are not likely to get a correct dose. Roadrunner Pharmacy can compound it for you. Your vet can call in a prescription and the pharmacy can ship it right to you. ( https://roadrunnerpharmacy.com/product-catalog/ )

Hi there. Dosing medication for our patients is often inconvenient, since most generic drugs are manufactured for human use (and human dosage ranges). If your kitty needs an amount of gabapentin that is difficult to give accurately using 100 mg capules, I would suggest talking to your veterinarian about having it compounded into a liquid or flavored chew, that can be made into the correct dose for Trixie.
