Why is my 9-year-old cat still peeing outside the box with a UTI?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 11 lbs

I have taken my 9 year old cat to the vet because she started peeing right in front of the litter box. It only happens about once week and was given antibiotic drops for a UTI. She went again outside the box so took her back and the vet said she has a UTI that has not cleared completely but was almost clear and gave her a shot and pills for the next 6 days. She went outside the box again She only does it abut once a week. Any thoughts are welcome.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Blackie. Urinary tract infections are not all that common in cats. I recommend that she has a urine culture performed to ensure there is an infection present and the correct antibiotic is prescribed. If there is not an infection or if it has resolved, then she should have x-rays to look for bladder stones. If this is not the case, idiopathic cystitis is very common in cats. This may be her problem. I hope this information helps!
