Why is my puppy peeing everywhere during her first heat cycle?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cockapoo | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 28 days old | 9 lbs

My puppy is going through her first heat cycle. We are concerned because we had her scheduled for a spay and neuter. She has great progress with potty training but these past few days she’s been having accidents in the house. She did the unimaginable and jumped onto the couch and peed. She has peed in the house in a long time and never on the couch. This left us angry due to her progress but we understand it’s not entirely her fault. Please help/explain this behavior

Occasionally dogs will have various unusual behaviors during a heat cycle, and it's possible that this is the cause. Inappropriate urination can also be a sign of a urinary tract infection so you may want to have Zoey examined by your vet to make sure there is nothing more serious going on.
