My dog is spotting red mucus after giving birth, is she in heat again?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 1 year old

My chi/ jack Russell / min pin mix gave birth on December 17th 4 days after arriving in our home as a rescue. 3 days later her single puppy was killed by another dog visiting our home...since then Casy has continued spotting. She has visited the vet 3 times now because of this issue...the discharge has no odor and is most apparent when she pees as a small amount of red mucus on the top of the puddle ....its not mixed in with the urine...shes behaving like she is in heat, could this be the case?

She should not be back in heat this quickly. Did the vet run a urine test to check for a UTI? Have they prescribed any medications? That is where I would start. I suspect it is normal post-partum discharge she is having but it is best to have her checked out. I strongly recommend having her spayed as soon as possible.
