My dog has a red, hard bump on her back. What should I expect?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 7 months old | 13 lbs

I recently come upon this red bump on my dog’s back. It doesn’t feel like a mole more of like a hard pimple. I am going to take her to the vet but I want to know what to expect it to be ? She doesn’t pick at it or doesn’t seem to bother her when I touch it.

Due to the color, this is either a reaction to an insect bite or a mass. I would expect your vet to want to possibly shave the area to get a closer view of it, and possibly get samples from it. If an insect bite is more likely, then a short course of anti-inflammatory medication can help resolve the area, especially if it is causing Hazel discomfort. I hope that this lesion resolves soon and is nothing more than an insect bite. Best of luck and take care.
