My dog has hot, scabby, raised lines on his skin. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 40 lbs

My dog, Julian is a Shepard/Pit mix. He is almost 2 years old, fixed and up to date with all vaccines. He recently developed raised lines all over his sides and across his back. These lines have not gone away, his playfulness has declined and there is heat coming from the areas. Today, we noticed the lines have broken through the skin and are scabbing over and look almost like carpet fiber. Our vet is booked out a week and being Sunday, there is no help today in our area. Any help is appreciated

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Julian. He will need to see a veterinarian. Regardless of the underlying cause, I worry that an infection is present based on your description. If so, he may require an antibiotic or medicated shampoo. In the meantime, you can try bathing him with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula to soothe the skin. Place an E-collar on him if he tries to lick or bite affected areas. I hope this information helps!
