Cat with megacolon had enema, still can't poop. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 7 years and 6 months old | 12 lbs

Hello, my cat dexter is 7 and has mega colon, he saw the vet today to have an enema done to relive some constipation, it’s been almost 12 hours and he still is unable to pass his stool but is playful and eating well. He has has lactulose and laxatone since coming home..is it possible the stool will pass still? Vet said it was higher up in the colon rather than lower..

It's possible it will pass but sometimes it can't. I recommend to call your vet and get a time line for when Dexter needs to come back in if he does not pass the stool. These cats often benefit from fluid therapy. In severe cases this needs to be IV but as a maintenance therapy, it could be subcutaneous which you may be able to do at home. These cats often benefit from a high fiber diet and I recommend Royal Canin Fiber Response. Many cats do very well on this diet. I recommend to discuss this with your veterinarian. I hope this helps.
