My pet rat breathes loudly since birth. What's causing this?

My pet rat is now 5 months old and since he was born has always breathed very loudly almost like hes got flem in him airways. i thought it might be normal since he was born with it and otherwise seems completley healthy but what would be the reason for this? Its very loud sounds too with every breath in and out

Thanks for reaching out about Chip. The most common respiratory ailment that affects rats, would be mycoplasmosis. This is a bacteria-like infection that could be managed by antibiotics but is rarely cured. Congenital malformation in the sinus could also explain the noises, but these are not treatable.
