Why is my dog suddenly quiet, slow, and had a loud coughing fit?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Male | neutered | 10 years and 4 months old | 11.3 lbs

Yesterday my dog was licking himself when all of the sudden he started hyperventilating/coughing extremely loud, I never heard him do that, (I’m not sure what the difference is). Since then he’s been extremely quiet (not barking at people outside), he’s also moving very slowly (won’t climb stairs). His tail is still up so I don’t know if he’s scared of what happened yesterday or something else is wrong.

The way you described it, it sounds like he was reverse sneezing. Look up some YouTube videos on "dog reverse sneezing" and see if you think it was that. If so, it is nothing to be concerned with. His other symptoms sound like he may have injured his back or neck and he should be examined by your vet so they can get their hands on him to see if they can find the source of pain.
