My cat's bum is swollen and red after deworming, should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 5 months old

I just adopted a shelter cat a week ago. She was so scared and even pooped in her carrier on the way home. I noticed that she had tapeworm in her stool. I dewormer her and the tapeworm definitely came out but now it looks like her bum is swollen and a bit red. Should I take her in to see someone in person?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Mindy. Yes, I recommend that she sees a veterinarian. Cats that have parasites frequently have more than one type. It is best to have her examined and a stool sample tested. Sometimes the anus can be res from straining to defecate. I hope this information helps!
