My dog's eye is red and lumpy after a tick bite. Could it be infected?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog was bitten by a tick above his eyelid about two weeks ago. The entire tick was removed. Today I noticed a hard lump. His eye is slightly red, he also seems to be light sensitive and shy away when I come close to that side of his face. Could it be infected? We have a vet appointment on Monday.

Occasionally tick bites can become infected although it is not very common. It's also possible that this is a growth on the eyelid and not related to the original tick bite. I think it should be okay to wait until your vet appointment as long as your dog is not squinting and you don't notice cloudiness of the eye itself or any discharge.
