Is there hope for my dog with severe Stage 4 kidney disease?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 2 years and 4 months old | 56 lbs

My dog had a blood creatinine level of 14 mg/dl yesterday. After one day of fluid treatment, it has fallen to 13 mg/dl. I'm convinced my vet is giving me false hope that Zola will recover. From my research, the level is so far into Stage IV kidney disease that it is irreversible. Is there any research on dogs surviving the severity of this kidney disease?

Poor Zola. I am so very sorry she isnt doing well. Unfortunately I do feel that her non response to treatment is a negative prognostic indicator. As far as studies, for a young dog in renal failure, the outcome is not good unfortunately. But it depends on the cause. Did she get in to grapes? Antifreeze? Was she tested for Lepto? I would say to try another 24 to 48 hours and get more information about potential cause of the kidney failure
