Why is my raw-fed dog thin, eating poop, and has mucus stool?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Staffordshire Bull Terrier | Female | spayed

Hi. I'm just looking for some advice as at the moment I cannot afford to take my dog the the vet. My staffy is on a raw diet and has been struggling to gain wait for a while now and she gets fed big portions. We have tried to add cooked sweet potatoes to her meals to help her gain wait but it's not working. She has never been a greedy dog but recently she has taken to stealing food, tipping over the bin to eat and eating a lot of poo. Almost all her poo is mucus and I'm really worried.

There are a couple things that could be happening. The raw diet you are feeding my not be balanced. Diets that are not balanced can create thin pets. Just so you know, balancing diets is not easy. She could have parasites stealing nutrients. She could be a naturally thin dogs who is not receiving enough exercise to build muscle (or doesn't have the proper nutrients to build muscle). I recommend to start by having Nyla examined by the veterinarian. Know exactly what you are feeding her and discuss this with your veterinarian. Depending on your vet's education and interests, they may be able to help you balance a diet or they may refer you to a veterinary nutritionist (which is generally the best option). I hope this helps.
