Can my dog's leash pulling cause seizures or neck/spine damage?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | neutered | 6 years old | 38.8 lbs

Hi. Yesterday my dog had a seizure that lasted about a minute. The vet ran a blood test and electrolyte test and everything came back normal. I realized that for years he has been pulling really hard on his leash - especially when we leave him on a long leash in our yard. Could this have caused any spine/neck damage that could have caused a seizure? Besides switching to a harness going forward, what can we do to make sure there's no existing damage? Would there be other symptoms?

I appreciate your concern and thoughtfulness regarding pulling on the leash, but this would have contributed to the seizures. Head trauma could, however damage to the spine would not. Since he is a "puller," it is wise to switch to a harness to protect his neck/spine/trachea moving forward, however its not going to affect his seizures. If he had symptoms related to spinal cord damage, I'd expect him to show pain, ataxia (walking drunk), or occasionally lifting up one front leg. If he shows any of those symptoms please have him evaluated. As for the seizures, follow your vet's instructions regarding any medications. thank you for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
