Why does my old dog have painful sores and seem lethargic?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered

My roughly 15 year old pup has two open wounds around his bum hole and some starting on his groin area I have attached a photo he seems to be in alot of pain he's very lethargic and very willing to be active but just doesn't have the energy I'm concerned about what these sores are and how I should treat them but don't have the funds to make it to a vet at this time. He is an old dog but usually is extremely playful and lively and just hasn't been lately.

It could be that Rocky has ruptured his anal sacs, and it's concerning that he is very lethargic and in pain. This really does have to be treated by a vet now. I would see if there is a low cost clinic in your area, if the vet accepts payment plans, or if you can borrow money from family and friends to afford the vet.

Poor Rocky! He could be biting his tail and unable to poo because he has impacted anal sacs preventing him from passing feces. I see that he isn't neutered, and unneutered dogs are prone to anal tumors, which would also interfere with him passing feces. Finally, he could be biting his tail because he's suffering from fleas. Rocky has to see a vet for this, as it's quite serious he's biting his tail so much it's bleeding, he's yelping in pain, and hasn't pooped in two days. I can give you some resources that may help you afford a vet. My dog came inside tonight acting very unusual. He is lethargic and shaking. What could be wrong with him?
Poor guy. Unfortunately, lethargy and shaking can be caused by a number of conditions including: toxin ingestion, severe anemia, sepsis (infection in the bloodstream), an electrolyte imbalance, or a neurological condition just to name a few. If Rocky is acating abnormal in this way and doesn't seem to be snapping out of it for more than 30 mins or so, then its best to take him to your local ER vet for further evaluation. Please also check his gum color to ensure they are still nice and pink. Pale gums are cause for an immediate vet visit wtihout waiting for the pet to improve. I do hope that Rocky's condition imrpoves soon! Best of luck and take care.

Every time my dog tries to get up start crying and every time he tries to move he starts crying I don't know what to do please help
Hi and thanks for your question on Boop by Petco! I am sorry Rocky is having such a hard time. It is very hard to say what is going on with Rocky without examining him first. However, crying when trying to move is a serious sign of pain and obvious discomfort. Joint pain from arthritis, abdominal pain, a fracture of the limb could be the source of the pain, although it is hard to say sigh unseen. My best advice for you and is to take Rocky to an emergency veterinary clinic right away so they can be assess what the cause of the pain may be and treat him quickly. Poor Rocky. He could have a problem with his prostate, may have leptospirosis, a UTI, or bladder stones causing this. He is very sick and he needs to see a vet immediately. Please take him into one now.

I'm sorry Rascal isn't feeling well! Lethargy is a very general sign of illness, and it could be caused by things such as systemic illness, infection, inflammation, or injury. He really should be seen by a vet asap. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. Non healing fissure like sores on lips, dark scabs. Dog not eating, lethargic. Labwork good. History of extramdullary plasmacytoma tumor excised on gum. 15 year old coonhound on Dermaxx & tramadol for hip arthritis
This could suggest a recurrence if the cancer or of a different kind of cancer. This would not necessarily be seen on bloodwork. I would suggest you have your vet perform imaging or possibly a CT scan to rule out any cancerous masses. In the meanwhile antibiotic therapy may be warranted to prevent infection of the wounds.

Poor Rocky! Yes, I would take him into a vet as being in pain isn't normal for a dog of any age. Especially since he has been in pain for a couple of days, this is something that needs to be seen right away. It could be he was injured playing with your other dog, but there could be another problem causing his pain such as pancreatitis or a prostate problem. Please take him into a vet right away.

My dog seems to be in pain he screeches when he moves a certain way or barks
Hello, sorry to hear about Rocky. It sounds like he could have back or neck pain. Other signs may include walking very gingerly, carrying his head low, avoiding stairs and not moving onto furniture, and yelping/crying when being picked up. You should rest Rocky until he can be seen by his veterinarian. This is done by keeping him restricted in his crate, not allowing him to jump or use stairs, carrying him to go to the bathroom but then bringing him back in and do not allow him to run or play outdoors. Use a harness in the meantime and avoid neck leashes. Hope this helps and best of luck.

My dog has a pain under his arm , like where his armpit is , it hurts him when I touch it or when he jumps off the couch or a bed he cries.
Hello, and thank you for your question. It may be that Rocky has an injury of his front leg, such as a soft tissue injury (sprain), dislocation, or fracture. The armpit is also where some lymph nodes are located, and swelling of these lymph nodes may also cause pain, which is indicative of inflammation or infection. I would try to ensure strict rest for the next 24 hours (no running, jumping, or rough housing). If his pain persists after this time, or if he exhibits any lethargy or loss of appetite, I would recommend taking him to the vet for a full checkup. They can investigate for a possible leg injury, check for swollen lymph nodes, and check for infection. X-rays or blood tests may be recommended to further pinpoint the cause.
