My small dog ate pasta with garlic and onions. Is it safe for her?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 9 months old | 9 lbs

Hi! I left my dog alone for a minute while eating dinner and came back to find her eating my dish (bolognese style edamame pasta with a spiced red sauce with garlic and onions), I don’t think she ate a ton but I’m really not sure how much she consumed, she may have been alone for a full minute or 2. I’m just nervous because she’s an 8 lb dog and I know both garlic and onions can be harmful, any advice? Thanks!

Yes you are right, they are both harmful, but likely there isn't enough garlic and onion in this to cause problems. You may see some stomach upset such as vomiting or diarrhea from eating this, however.

This may cause some GI upset, and potentially could cause bigger problems if there was a lot of garlic and onion it, but otherwise, Amber should be fine. I bet she enjoyed it! If you see vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, a hunched up appearance, lethargy, loss of appetite, and/or pale gums, have her seen by a vet immediately.

Noodles, meat, cheese, and tomato sauce are not toxic to dogs, so I would not expect this to cause any serious problems :) She may have a mild upset stomach for the next day or so if she isn't used to human food like this, but otherwise she should be just fine.

For this small amount of onion, I think Nova will be just fine. Larger amounts of onion or garlic can cause damage to her red blood cells. If you notice any concerning symptoms, you should have her examined by your vet.

Probably not, but dogs should be eating onions or garlic in any form. If it was only 1 piece one time, then you should be okay. But if it is multiples pieces or 1 piece several times, then Lilly may need to see a vet to check for anemia.

No, she will not die. These kind of powders contain small quantity of onion and garlic, usually way below toxic dose for dogs. So, your Xena may develop mild gastroenteritis (maybe a vomit and/or loose stools) but otherwise she will not get into any serious problems.

A few pieces of onion ingested by a dog of Mochi's size will likely cause nothing worse than some minor stomach upset, if anything at all. She would need to eat 2 or 3 med/large onions in order to be at risk of serious toxicity. If she develops vomiting or diarrhea but continues to behave normally, you can fast her for 24 hours then feed a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Transition slowly to her regular diet afterwards.

I understand your concern. Thankfully none of these ingredients is toxic to pets so she is in the clear there. At the most she may have some stomach upset (vomiting and diarrhea ). You can give her a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice I cottage cheese for a few days to help settle her stomach. Otherwise she should recover well. Now no more spaghetti for her! : ). I hope she turns out ok.

Hello. It takes a fair amount on onion ( like several tablespoons ), or several cloves of garlic to cause any problems in dogs, especially one Moon's size. I would not be concerned at all about this very small piece. Thanks for contacting Boop by Petco.

Fortunately I doubt there was enough onion or garlic to cause a problem for Brucie. It takes a fairly large amount of either one to cause toxicity. If you wanted to be extra safe you could either call the Pet Poison Helpline to see if they have access to information that would help them estimate exactly how much onion and garlic was in the can, or you could ask your vet about checking a hematocrit level in 48 hours. Onions and garlic cause damage to the red blood cells and can cause hemolytic anemia but the signs are usually not apparent for a couple of days. www. Petpoisonhelpline.com

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is unlikely to be an issue in terms of the garlic and onion powder as it was just a bit. This may result though in gastrointestinal upset.
