My dog ate placentas after birth. Why isn't she eating 24 hours later?

It is normal for them to clean and eat the placentas but she should have an appetite and be feeling fine. She may need to be checked to see if there are any retained membranes or a uterine infection which can make her feel bad. You can try to give her boiled chicken and rice to help her stool and her appetite. If she seems too weak you may to bottle feed the puppies to let her rest since nursing burns alot of calories.

Partial loss of appetite could be completely normal the days after giving birth. Try to offer her very palatable and appetible food (like chicken for example!) and see if the appetite gets slightly better in the next 48hours. If not a check up would be needed to make sure everything it is all right with her.

Poor Lucy. She could be suffering from electrolyte imbalance after labor, an infection in her uterus or mammary glands, a puppy that she never delivered that is now infected or more. You could try to offer her some plain boiled chicken (no bones) and white rice or canned dog food to see if you can entice her to eat. If she won’t eat, I would strongly recommend to have a vet look at her. Your vet will be able to run blood work and even X-rays if needed. They will be able to recommend to best treatment plan for her and get her started on the proper meds (even appetite stimulants) to help her feel better. I hope this helps.

If Ladi recently had puppies and isn't eating or drinking, I would be concerned that she either has a puppy stuck (dystocia) or that she needs fluids, or may have low calcium. I recommend taking her to her veterinarian to be evaluated. Sometimes they just need a calcium supplement, but she may also need x-rays to make sure all of the puppies are out. Also, anytime a dog is pregnant and lactating, it is recommended to feed them puppy food due to the higher nutritional values. If she isn't on this, I recommend switching her.

Hello. Is this Khaleesi's first litter? She may just be inexperienced, & probably still a little uncomfortable from her labor. As long as she is very intent on carry for her babies, she may neglect herself for a day or so. When she gets hungry, she will leave her babies for a few minutes. Give her a little more time. She needs to be eating something, or she will have very little energy for the whelping. Take her to the vet for xrays, then you'll know the size of the litter and will know if she's having trouble or needs a c section. While there, ask for cerenia injections for the next few days, as this is a fantastic anti-nausea drug that has all kinds of benefits. In this case, I'm hoping it will get her eating for you. If she had a dead pup last litter, that tells me she may be dealing with some uterine inertia during labor, and could benefit from calcium or oxytocin injections, but this requires your working with a reproduction veterinarian through this process. Make sure she has water close by and see if she'll eat a biscuit. Often new mothers take a day or two to get their appetite back. Give her another day or so then if she still won't eat or drink then take her in. As far as the discharge goes it can be there for up to a week or so. If she stops nursing or the discharge has a foul odor then again I would bring her in for an exam. They may take an X-ray to make sure there are no more puppies and perhaps give her medication to contract the uterus to get rid of any fluid or afterbirth. I am very sorry to hear that you are experiencing these issues with Gretal. There are many conditions which can affect the recently postpartum female dog including exhaustion, infection, trauma, hypoglycaemia, severe blood loss causing anemia, and mastitis. Watch for collapse, lethargy, pale gums, dry gums, vomiting, diarrhoea, Loss of blood, complete loss of appetite or the signs of mastitis. Mastitis is a bacterial infection of one, or sometimes more then one, of the milk producing glands in the breasts. Other clinical signs would be; Swelling Firm Warm Discharge (other then milk) painful to the touch Loss of appetite Lethargy Neglect of puppies If you notice any of the above clinical signs, or suspect that Gretal could have mastitis, based on the above clinical signs I would suggest that you take her to see a veterinarian. The vet will be able to prescribe an antibiotics antiinflamatory medications and pain relief. In the meantime you can apply a cool compress to the affect

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor May! Yes, I would bring her to the Vet. I would want to be sure she doesn't have an infection in her uterus (pyometra) which requires an emergency spay. A pyometra is an emergency. Dogs with an infected uterus drink a lot, don't eat, vomit and are very sick. She should have X-rays of her belly (won't hurt any puppies), blood work and potentially an ultrasound. I wish May the very best!
