It does take a while to get the dog used to it and they still want to rub their faces on people to get them off. They do that in the exam room with me. I would gradually increase the time you have it on in the house before going on walks and give him treats or peanut butter while he has it on. That way he associates it with good things. I do think so people think it is a muzzle but more and more people know what they are. Personally if it makes your life easier I wouldn't care what some people think. I think people think more highly of the gentle leader than the prong collar. As for walking on a loose leash, it may help with that but it really depends on the dog. I think you meant leash? Yes, gentle pulling on a leash while out for a walk is safe. It can take puppies several weeks to understand the purpose of a leash. If you puppies is coughing or snorting when pulling on the leash he may need to wear a harness instead of a collar. Obedience training will help you puppy understand to walk next to you instead of pulling on a leash. A leash should never be left on a puppy without you being on the other end - they can get easily tangled up and choke!

I can understand that you want him to be under voice control and walk beside you without a leash but this is usually very difficult because dogs are such curious creatures. It is also unsafe. I always recommend having a dog on a leash when not in a fenced in area because of cars and other animals passing by could seriously injure your dog. All it takes is a small break in concentration (from a passerby, another pet, or a squirrel or bird) for your dog to not listen to your commands and run off. I would recommend against using the retractable lead. It can indirectly lead to problems because you have less control (things like her taking off towards a dog/person when you thought you had it locked to a shorter position, "clothes lining" someone with the sharp string, not being able to react quickly to changes in your environment like a car or unfriendly dog showing up suddenly). It's better to have a 4-6 foot leather or nylon leash for walking and then to be fully off-leash in safe situations. If you're doing to let her off-leash in any public area (fenced or not), I think it's important to have a bullet proof recall first. I hope that helps!

Some dogs no matter how hard you work with them to have them go off leash, they just cannot be trusted off leash. You can start with a short leash and treats in your pocket. Let him have some lead and then call him back and him Max a treat. Little by little letting him have more freedom and see if he comes back. If it is going to work it will take time. I never truly recommend having your dog completely off leash because if something catches their eyes, ears or nose they sometimes will not come back because they are so focused on something.
