My dog has a chest infection. Should I stop or switch antibiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 7 months old | 77 lbs

Yesterday a vet diagnosed my dog with chest infection and gave him human antibiotics (vetamox), a fever reducer (that he should not have taken), and flagyl. Today I took him to another doctor and he did chest x-rays that showed bronchitis and gave him another fever reducer (for pets). The first dr prescribed antibiotics and I don’t know if it’s okay to stop the dosage, but can‘t find that same medication anywhere and the first dr said give him augmentin instead. He’s going to the 2nd dr tomorrow

Hello. Vetamox & Augmentin are the exact same antibiotics : A combination of Amoxicillin & Clavulanate acid. I would not stop the medication until you see the other veterinarian tomorrow. All the best to Sparky & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
