Redness around dog's stitches 6 days post-op: normal or infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 5 months old | 40 lbs

My dog is 6 days post-op. I’ve taken precautions to avoid infections, but I’m concerned about the redness around the sutures. Is this a normal part of healing or should I take him to the vet for antibiotics? (pictures for reference attached) He hasn’t had any symptoms, but I just want to be on the safe side.

Hello. The scrotum does look a little red for being 6 days post-op, but I am not sure it requires antibiotics. I would start by gently cleaning the skin with a skin antiseptic like Hibiclens twice a day. You can purchase this at any pharmacy. If the redness continues to spread, or Doug seems to be uncomfortable, then do see your veterinarian. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
