Why does my dog vomit and refuse new food during kibble transition?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

So I’ve been trying to switch my dog to a new kibble brand (Kirkland dog food) and she has been puking up clear vomit at night. I’ve only been mixing 1/4-1/3 cup into her morning meals with the old kibble. What can I do to make this transition easier? Today she absolutely refused eating the new food that was mixed in

She has probably developed an aversion to the new food making her vomit and now she doesn't want it. I think you are better off using a different food. This one does not agree with her for some reason. The only suggestion I would have is to put a gravy (food topper) or some canned dog food mixed with it to see if that will help. I'm pretty sure Kirkland has canned food as well as dry. ( https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/wholehearted-lamb-recipe-in-gravy-dog-meal-topper )

Forcing Stephanie to eat won't cause her to want to eat that food. I am concerned that the vomiting could be caused by intestinal disease or other illness. I would recommend that she get checked out by the vet. If she is healthy, just being picky, then simply leaving out a good-quality dog kibble and not feeding her anything else should be enough to encourage her to start eating the dog food instead of human food.
