My dog has runny poop with blood, but is acting normal. What to do?

Poor Buddy! Diarrhea can be caused by a variety of conditions, including parasites, viruses, "garbage gut" from eating different foods or treats, among many others. Buddy may be having a bit of blood in his stool from irritation to the colon or parasites. Since you can't take him to the vet today and he is otherwise eating and drinking normally, try withholding food for the next 12-24 hours. After that time, offer boiled white meat chicken and white rice (1 cup of the 50:50 mixture for every 10 pounds of body weight, divided into 2-4 smaller meals) for the next few days. After several days on this bland diet, gradually mix in his normal dog food over another 5-7 days. However, if his diarrhea continues or worsens, if he becomes lethargic, stops eating and drinking, or has more blood in his stool, Buddy will need to go to his vet for further evaluation. I am very sorry to hear that Buddy is experiencing this issue, I am sure it is unsettling. From what you are describing, a normal bowel movement which becomes liquid and has fresh blood in it, it sounds as though Buddy has colitis, or inflammation of the last portion of the large intestines. There are several causes of colitis in dogs, ranging from bacterial infections, parasite infestations, IBD, or ingestion of contaminated food. Since you have only noticed one such episode I would continue to monitor Buddy at home. Provide a bland diet of boiled boneless chicken breast and white rice and plenty of fresh water. If the episodes continue, if Buddy becomes depressed, passes large amounts of blood, vomits, or seems very uncomfortable take Buddy to see his vet. I'm sorry to hear Frank is having an issue! If he is otherwise acting normally you can try to offer him a bland diet of boiled chicken and sweet potato or rice to see if this helps. If the diarrhea persists, he starts vomiting , stops eating or becomes lethargic he will need to be examined by a veterinarian right away. Even random food can cause GI upset. The only food Kira needs is her dog food. I'm concerned that she is pooping blood, keep a close eye on that. They should ask many detailed questions and help you decide if Jennex should come in for an exam today or if you can try a bland diet +/- probiotics and see if it passes after 24 hours. Not the best way to wake up in the morning is it? I think that if they are acting normally, you don't have to rush out to the vet at this time. They might have just gotten into some food either inside or outside the house that they normally don't eat. I would go ahead and fast them for the next 12 - 18 hours, then feed some boiled chicken and rice for the following 2-3 days before resuming their normal diet. If matters begin to get worse or other clinical signs develop, considering making a veterinary appointment. You may also want to take the fecal sample into the veterinarian for a fecal analysis, just to make sure there isn't anything funny going on like a parasite. Anyway, hope all gets better soon. If he is acting normal then you can withhold food for 12 hours and then offer him a small amount of a bland diet, like boiled chicken and white rice, and see how he does with that. You could also add a probiotic to his food. If the diarrhea continues, he starts vomiting, and/or becomes lethargic then he needs to be examined by a vet for treatment. He could have an infection, parasite, colitis, HGE, etc. and your vet can run lab-work to help diagnose and treat. Hope he feels better soon!

Hello, sorry to hear about Brownie. It sounds like he could be having some inflammation of his colon. This could be associated with stress, parasites, or other form of infections. Inflammation of the colon can also be caused by having food sensitivities and thus this could be food related. You should try and feed him a bland diet for the next 3-5 days. This can be in the form of plain white rice, skinless and boneless boiled chicken, and low fat cottage cheese. After this, you can transition him back to his normal diet. If he develops any diarrhea with our without blood, if he vomits more than 2-3 times in one day, loses appetite, or becomes very lethargic then he should be seen by his veterinarian immediately.
