My dog has jaundice and won't eat. What can I feed her safely?

This is a quite generic but concerning sign. Differentials are many, from gastrointestinal diseases (infection/inflammations often dietary related) to any disease that can spread systemically (causing lethargy for example) like infection, and anything that can cause pain/discomfort. A check up at your local veterinarian is needed as soon as possible if inappetence is so persistent. Nutritional support is absolutely required. If he is very lethargic, have him examined by your veterinarian or at the local veterinary ER. If this is not possible, you can try withholding food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet ( boiled boneless / skinless chicken and plain white rice) in small, frequent amounts. Serve warm or mix in a teaspoon or two of baby food to stimulate the appetite. Feed until the stool is normal then transition slowly to the regular diet. If the diarrhea and lethargy do not resolve, you will definitely need to see your veterinarian.

I’m sorry to hear fluffy is dealing with this. A small amount of chicken or chicken baby food is likely ok to offer her, as of course it is important to get her eating. Without knowing the details of her lab work it is hard to give specific nutritional information. So I would suggest getting in touch with her vet when you can. If her liver is failing we do need to be more careful about the amount of protein they are consuming.

If there is an internal medicine specialist in the area I would recommend having Nala seen by them. Otherwise I would be talking with your vet about testing for infectious diseases. However, it looks like they have treated her with broad spectrum antibiotics as well as IV fluids. I would recommend continuing treatment. She may need a feeding tube placed to try to keep her protein up during this illness. Unfortunately, with how severe this is, she may or may not pull through it, but the best chance of her making it through is to be aggressive with her treatment. I would suggest continuing to monitor her liver and white cell count, and to have imaging done and possible samples of her liver to try to determine the cause of the infection. Poor Baby! I would make sure you have him on a liver supplement and make sure you have consulted with your vet about medications that he needs to be on for his liver issues. I am okay with him eating chicken because eating something is better than nothing at all. I would consider adding in a multi-vitamin to help supplement the other nutrients he isn't getting. If his appetite is continuing to decrease, I would talk to your vet about rechecking his bloodwork to see if he needs any fluids or change in his medications and also getting him on an appetite stimulant. Poor Daisie! Withhold food tonight, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she refuses to eat the bland diet, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. I also see that she isn't spayed. If you notice any discharge coming from her private area, take her into a vet immediately. That discharge combined with her other symptoms indicates a pyometra. A pyometra is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. I hope this helps!

For any GI upset, a bland diet (such as white rice and plain boiled white meat chicken) that is easily digestible is a good option. If chicken isn't an option for her, very lean ground beef browned in a skillet with no oil is another good option. If she continues vomiting, doesn't want to eat or otherwise starts acting ill, then I would recommend having her evaluated by her regular veterinarian. Good luck!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Olivia. I recommend asking her veterinarian to prescribe anti-nausea medication and possibly an appetite stimulant as this should help. She will likely need pain control as well. Nausea and pain will cause a dramatic decrease in appetite. As far as diet, low fat prescription canned food will be palatable and easily digested. Other options are soaking her dry kibble in warm water. Many dogs will like it that way. You can also try boiled chicken and plain steamed rice (no seasonings). I hope this information helps.
