My Boxer has a firm, painless bump on his leg. What is this growth?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | spayed | 8 years and 9 months old

Hi there, recently I noticed a a bump about the size of a large grape on my boxer dogs front left leg. It looks a little bit like a boil but it doesn't feel 'squishy'. When i pressed down on it my dog didn't flinch or move so it doesn't seem to be particularly painful. There is hair and fur growing through it it seems. Do you know what this is or how it couldn't be treated? Thank you very much

This could be from an injured, a benign growth, or a malignant growth. Without seeing Kes in person, I can't say for certain. I think it should be checked out by a vet, and depending on what the cause is, the vet will discuss treatment options.

Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your question about Kiara! In Boxers, mast cell tumors are common and it's possible this could be a mast cell tumor. It could also be another type of tumor, malignant or benign. Given that it has double in size, she should see a vet first thing Monday. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of this lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment plans with you. Good luck, I hope this helps!
