My senior dog with kidney disease is coughing non-stop. Is it linked?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 18 years old | 11 lbs

Iam concerned about Pixi because she was diagnosed with stage 1 kidney disease and only been given 6 months to live. Yesterday and all through the night she has been coughing and clearing her throat continuously. She has done this ocassionally, but never this repetitive. Could this be related to her kidney disease? By the way, I had trouble with the website. Pixi is a Chihuahua mix, weighs 11 lbs, and is 18 years old. Thank you!

Coughing is not usually a sign of kidney disease - it's possible that Pixi has a respiratory infection, inflammation of her nose and throat, or even something more serious like heart disease. I would definitely recommend having her examined by a vet - if she seems to be having difficulty breathing or she is coughing so much she can't rest I'd recommend seeing an emergency vet today.
