Why does my female rat have a red, thin-skinned lump on her belly?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rat | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 5 months old

My rat has a very unusual lump growing around it’s bottom region, it is different from the normal tumours as it’s red in colour and the skin is very thin almost like a sack

Without seeing it i can't really tell you what it it is but as she is a female rat and considering her age it is most likely a mammary gland tumor, these are considered benign but if not removed surgically they become huge very fast and your rat won't be able to cope with it at some point, my recommendation is to have it removed surgically ASAP.
