Why is my dog snorting and struggling to breathe like a blockage?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 9 days old

He keeps snorting and struggles to breathe after drinking water, being excited, putting him down after being held and occasionally at random... it’s like there’s a blockage. The vet gave me medicine to treat inflammation which I haven’t given as I don’t believe this to be the reason why he’s unable no to catch his breath. Ongoing for 2/3 months gradually becoming more frequent the last 3 weeks. Does not have short snout.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bentley. An upper respiratory tract infection cause the symptoms you have described. Small breed dogs are also prone to a condition known as collapsing trachea. This can be diagnosed on x-rays of his neck and chest. I recommend discussing these possibilities with his veterinarian. I hope this information helps!
