Is hemp oil in dog joint supplements a good idea for my dog?

Just like with human medicine, there is much to be studied when it comes to CBD treatment in dogs, so the answer is actually unknown. The product you have shown is not considered a CBD supplement as it just contains hemp seeds, which do not have the CBD's like marijuana flowers do. I see that this product also has omega 3/6 fatty acids which may be helpful. However, I wouldn't expect this product to be very helpful. It appears safe though, so you can give it and see if you notice any difference. If you finish the bottle and haven't noticed any benefit, then I wouldn't buy anymore. While supplements may be a helpful adjunct, the best products for arthritis are the ones your veterinarian can prescribe. CBD has not been studied enough in animals for me to make a recommendation. You can use it if you want but no studies have been done to determine appropriate dosing, etc. The companies making this CBD oil have no clue. The people I know that have tried it report that all it does is make the animal sleepy. It is not actually helping the arthritis. If Ciggy is in that much pain I would much more recommend a NSAID and/or pain medication combination as treatment (like Rimadyl and Tramadol combination). We know those help. If you are not using the one that also contains MSM I would recommend switching to that one as MSM is a natural anti-inflammatory. Dasuquin with MSM and Cosequin DS Plus MSM (both by Nutramax Labs) are excellent products. I prefer these because it is the same company that makes the human product, Cosamin, and one of the few companies that submits its products for outside testing to verify ingredients. The GlycoFlex line of products would also be one to consider. These are my own personal recommendations.

Yes, this is true. There are no scientific studies that definitively prove that fish oil and joint supplements work. There are no studies that prove they hurt, so vets do recommend them to see if they help dogs with particular conditions. In some cases, it does appear to help the dog, but whether that is due to a placebo effect or not isn't known.

Happy holidays to you, too! Joint supplements can be helpful to support the joint and minimize further damage, but they won't make current joint issues go away. I would discuss other medications with your vet. In a young dog with hip pain, I would do x-rays to look for hip dysplasia or other bony changes. Your vet may also have a recommendation for a different supplement for long-term use.

Great question! I really like Dasuquin and Cosequin as joint supplements for dogs. I have found that in senior dogs with arthritis, Dasuquin is a great option because it contains ASU, which stands for Avocado & Soybean Unsaphonifiables.
