My dog was kicked and is limping. What should I do with no vet nearby?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 7 months and 30 days old | 11 lbs

I live in a remote town in with no vet unless I fly the dog out on Monday (48hrs) A disabled man angrily kicked my small dog yesterday and afterward he was walking ok but began to limp after about an hour. Today he isn't putting weight on the back right leg. I can extend & bend the leg but when I lift or move him sometimes he yelps (so I stopped handling him). He doesn't yelp when I press the bone area, but gets acute pain in certain positions.. The pain seems to in the upper hip/thigh

Poor Bruce! That is awful. I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a leash, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.
