Why is my cat's poop bloody? Could grain-free food be the problem?

It might just be caused by something in the food that he ate. If he is otherwise acting normal then you could add a probiotic to his food, like Proviable or Fortiflora, and see if that helps. If his signs continue then he should be examined by a vet to determine if there is a problem that needs to be treated. Your vet can test a stool sample to help diagnose.

Blood in the stool can occur secondary to food sensitivity, but it can also be a sign of parasites or even occur secondary to stress, so I'd recommend seeing your veterinarian first to rule out these medical problems. Unfortunately if you're switching foods frequently it can be difficult to determine which is or isn't helping, so if your vet recommends a food trial you should stick to one specific food for at least 6 to 8 weeks before deciding if it is or isn't helping.

Other possible causes are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, stress. I would change her back to the original food and hopefully the blood goes away. If the blood persists for the next 2 days I would have her examine by your Vet before the holidays. Sometimes it can be diet related for example if you've changed his food it just may take a bit of time to agree with him. It could also be due to a bacterial infection. If it has only happened once or twice or if you have changed the food recently then I would just monitor it. If it has been going on for several days and you haven't changed the food then you should take him to your vet. If you are able to take a sample of the faeces too that may help with diagnosis. This can be a frustrating problem to deal with - some cats seem to develop recurrent colitis and have blood and/or mucous in the stool. Even though her diet has been changed sometimes there is a sensitivity to a specific protein in the food, and a hypoallergenic diet might help. I also sometimes try a probiotic in cases like this. This could be secondary to the diet Smores is currently on, an intestinal parasites, etc. I would recommend changing food to something completely different and see if this helps resolve the bloody stool. Blood in the stool is an indication to have her evaluated by a veterinarian. It is possible that this particular stool was difficult to pass and you helping to remove it may have caused a small amount of bleeding from the rectal tissue. Cats can become constipated, and if she has been passing less stool than usual, straining to defecate and had a decreased appetite I would recommend seeing a veterinarian. There are some other things that can cause blood in the stool as well including intestinal parasites, colitis or even inflammatory bowel disease. If the blood is persistent you should make an appointment to see your veterinarian as well.

Hello- Sudden diet changes can cause both diarrhea as well as constipation. The blood could indicate significant inflammation in the colon from diarrhea, diet changes, an infection and/or other causes. Anytime there's blood in the stools it is recommended your pet see their veterinarian as some cases require antibiotics and possibly fluids as the diarrhea and inflammation can cause dehydration.
