My cat has dry coughs for months. When should I take him to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered | 12 years old | 12 lbs

My cat has bad dry harsh coughing fits for a couple of months (maybe one a day). He has had no change in weight or activity. I am trying to determine if I should put him through a respiratory workup or not.

Sorry to hear Linus has been unwell. I would expect at his age you would know if he has issues with fur balls, although it may be an idea to try him with some laxapet or alternative in case he is having trouble getting them up. I would be slightly concerned that there msy be something going on in the chest given his age. I would urge you to get full bloods and some chest xrays taken at least. This will help your vet rule out numerous issues.
